Peter Ackroyd's T. S. Eliot: A Life (1984) is celebrated as the first thorough and authoritative biography of the poet, despite significant restrictions imposed by Eliot’s estate. Ackroyd was only permitted minimal quoting of Eliot’s published poetry and none of his unpublished correspondence, compelling him to adopt a more inventive and interpretative narrative style.
