Summary: Sinclair Lewis's "It Can't Happen Here" is a chillingly prophetic political satire that chronicles the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a populist demagogue who wins the American presidency by promising to restore prosperity and traditional values. Once in power, Windrip quickly dismantles democratic institutions, replaces the judiciary with military courts, and enforces a fascist regime through his private militia, the "Minute Men." The narrative follows Doremus Jessup, a liberal newspaper editor from Vermont, as he evolves from a skeptical observer to a leader in the underground resistance, ultimately illustrating that even a nation built on liberty is not immune to the siren song of authoritarianism and the erosion of civil rights.
