In a small provicial town arrangements and events surrounding the firemen's annual ball, honoring a retiring fire chief, go wrong at every turn. Presumed to be a commentary on the floundering Czech leadership, the film was "banned forever" in Czechoslovakia following the Russian invasion and prompted the film director's move to America.
