Foreign Trade and Economic Development -- Commodity Problems -- International Commodity Policies -- Industrial Exports -- The Export Instability Problem -- Import Substitution --Commercial Policy -- The Measurement of Protection -- Exchange Rate Policies -- Economic Integration.
This book describes and analyses the issues of world trade as they relate to the less developed countries. The tools of international economic theory are employed in a practical fashion to illuminate the options available to trade policymakers in rich and poor countries. Special emphasis is placed upon the strategy and policies which may be pursued by the less developed countries themselves.
Chapter One summarizes the disputes about the historical role of international trade. Chapters Two and Three analyse international commodity markets and policy for their modification or control. Chapters Four and Six consider industrial export expansion and import substitution. In Chapter Five the causes, costs and possible remedies for export instability are discussed. Chapters Seven to Ten provide an analysis of the various instruments of commercial and exchange-rate policy, including the measurement of effective protection, the devaluation decision, and economic integration.
G.K.Helleiner is Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto.
